The Armenian duduk is one of the world's oldest double-reed woodwind instruments, with a history spanning over 3,000 years. Hand-carved from the wood of the apricot tree — a tree native to the Armenian highlands — the duduk produces a uniquely warm, breathy, and deeply human tone that has moved listeners across cultures and generations. In 2005, UNESCO recognized the Armenian duduk and its music as a Masterpiece of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
No other wood replicates the sound of the apricot. Its cellular density and natural resin content give the duduk its characteristic warm resonance and soft, vocal-like timbre. Arthur Grigoryan selects only mature, fully dried apricot wood — often aged for several years — to ensure the finest acoustic result.
The duduk is played with a wide double reed made from the same apricot wood. The reed is as important as the body — it is the primary source of the instrument's expressive character. Each reed is handmade and must be carefully broken in and adjusted by the musician over time.
Traditional duduks are made in a variety of keys — from the deep G and F to the bright C and D. The key of A is the most traditional and widely used in Armenian folk music. When choosing your key, consider the music you wish to play and whether you will be performing with other instruments.
Arthur Grigoryan's traditional duduks are suitable for both beginners and professional musicians. Each instrument is hand-finished and personally tested by the master before leaving the workshop. Beginners are advised to start with the key of A — it is the most studied and has the most available teaching materials.
Every duduk that leaves Arthur Grigoryan's workshop in Yerevan, Armenia carries the legacy of his father, the legendary master Hovsep Grigoryan (OMO), and over 25 years of personal refinement. When you purchase a duduk from Arthur, you receive not just an instrument — but a living piece of Armenian cultural heritage.
